Certificate in Congressional Operations


Certificate in Communication and Advocacy
 


This is one of two Certificates offered by TheCapitol.Net.

Our Certificate in Communication and Advocacy supports the education and career goals of public affairs and legislative affairs professionals by giving them the background they need to handle media exchanges and effectively communicate and advocate in Washington, DC.

The Certificate in Congressional Operations and its hands-on training is ideal for staff and employees of

  • Federal Agencies

  • Public Relations Firms

  • Legislative Affairs Firms

  • Law Firms

  • Interest Groups

  • NGOs

  • Media Organizations

Courses emphasize key skills in media relations, crisis communication, executive briefings, speechwriting, writing congressional correspondence, critical thinking and writing, social media, and strategies for working with Congress.

Requirements

To enroll in our Certificate Program, please submit a letter of intent prior to completion of all required courses.

Participants completing 12 course days of programming within three years of enrollment receive a Certificate in Communication and Advocacy. 

Certificate in Communication and Advocacy students must complete three required courses and a minimum of 7 days of elective courses. Though course sequencing is not required, we recommend introductory course completion prior to advanced course participation.

Students may substitute relevant professional experience or attendance at one of our custom training programs for one (1) required course.  Please speak with our Vice President of Training: 703-739-3790 ext. 115 to learn more.

Upon completion of the Certificate program, we award a framed Certificate of Completion and issue a press release to the media.

Register for courses online or by postal mail or fax using our print registration form (1-page PDF).

 

Tuition

Tuition details are provided in each course description.

 

Cancellation and Transfer Policy

Standard policies, including payment, cancellation, and transfer policies, apply to all certificate program courses.

 

Courses

  • Our certificate program, including three required courses and eight elective courses, requires completion of at least 12 course-days.

    • Congressional Operations Briefing - Capitol Hill Workshop (3 days)

    • Writing for Government and Business: Critical Thinking and Writing (1 day)

    • Speechwriting: Preparing Speeches and Oral Presentations (1 day)

    Elective Courses (minimum of 7 course-days)

    • Media Relations for Public Affairs Professionals (1 day)

    • Advanced Media Relations Workshop (2 days)

    • Editing (1 day)

    • Effective Briefings (1 day)

    • Strategies for Working with Congress: Effective Communication and Advocacy on Capitol Hill (1/2 day)

    • Preparing and Delivering Congressional Testimony (1 day)

    • Delivering Congressional Testimony: Advanced Practicum (1/2 day)

    • Understanding the Regulatory Process (1 day)

    • Writing to Persuade (1 day)

    • Media Relations for the Public Affairs Professional -- 7-part Audio Course (1 1/2 days)
